The primary aim of the fund has been to raise money for donation to UK organisations committed to the prevention of young suicide and the promotion of mental health and emotional wellbeing. Since its formation in July 2009 the fund has raised just under £60,000.
The Problem
1600 young people take their own lives in the Uk every year. This is an alarming figure, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Much greater numbers of young people consider suicide and many thousands of these make an attempt at suicide. Suicidal behaviour of young people should be at the forefront of concern with parents, schools, universities and the government along with the commonly discussed worries of drugs, alcohol and sex.
The Aim
The James Naylor Memorial Fund is a registered charity. Initially our aim was to provide funding, through fund raising events and donations, to those charities currently working with the prevention of young suicide. To date the main benefiaciary has been Papyrus and in particular its helpline " HopeLine Uk".
We are now embarking on a pilot scheme, working in conjunction with VAWK (Voluntary Action within Kent). The proposal is to engage with the young people of Kent so raising awareness of young suicide and the impact on those touched by suicide, with a view to providing a substainable service beyond the pilot period. We will keep you appraised as this proposal develops.
